The Lord's Prayer

Jesus teaches us to pray humbly knowing that we are sinners and in need of God's forgiveness and help. When we pray, we close our eyes to eliminate distractions and bow our head in respect of entering the presence of God. Then we speak directly to our Lord knowing that He is here with us and listening.

The Lord's prayer is the way Jesus taught us to pray. It is written in the gospel of Matthew 6:9-13 and reads as follows:

"This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.'" Matthew 6:9-13 NIV.

Most Christians memorize the Lord's prayer as follows in English and in Arabic:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory.
for ever and ever.

Amen
